A tense situation unfolded at Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital in Baripada, Mayurbhanj, on Sunday when a woman was caught attempting to steal a newborn baby from the maternity ward. The accused, identified as 35-year-old Sandhyarani Mohanta, was apprehended by hospital attendants after she tried to flee with the baby while his mother was in the bathroom.

According to reports, Mohanta, a resident of Rasgovindpur village, traveled around 30 km to the hospital with the intention of stealing the newborn. She was attempting to hand over the baby to another individual when she was stopped. After being caught, she refused to return the baby, leading to tension in the ward.

Police were called to the scene, where the baby was safely returned to his mother, and Mohanta was taken into custody. The authorities are now investigating the incident and reviewing CCTV footage to determine if she had an accomplice.

The reason behind Mohanta’s actions remains unclear, especially as she is already a mother of two. Police and hospital officials are continuing to investigate. Security in the hospital has also been increased to prevent such incidents in the future.
