TORONTO – The Toronto Police Service has announced the arrest of a man involved in a fraudulent loan scam targeting members of the Chinese community in the North York area.
The accused, identified as Wing Fung Wilfred Leung, 48, is alleged to have approached younger Chinese residents, claiming he needed gas money to drive to university or pick up family. He would then ask the victims for an e-transfer, promising to pay them back. To gain their trust, he allowed the complainants to take pictures of his identification. However, after receiving the funds, he would cease all communication.
On January 15, 2025, Leung was arrested and charged with nine counts of Fraud Under $5000 and nine counts of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000. He is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice, 10 Armoury Street, on February 26, 2025, at 2:00 p.m.
Investigators are concerned there may be additional victims in the North York area. An image of Mr. Leung has been released, and police are urging anyone with further information or who believes they may be a victim of the scam to come forward.
