A man who violently attacked two teenagers on a train from Bristol to Newport has been jailed for 10 months.
William Loosley, 39, of Usk Way, Newport, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and was sentenced at Newport Magistrates’ Court on April 10. The incident, described as “vile and unprovoked”, left one teenage boy unconscious and a teenage girl physically restrained.
Loosley was travelling with Jasmine Brine, 31, of Two Locks, Cwmbran, who also pleaded guilty to one count of assault. She received a 12-month community order, 100 hours of unpaid work, a 90-day alcohol abstinence order, and was ordered to pay £364 in costs.
The incident occurred at around 11pm on April 1, 2024, when the two teenagers were returning home from a night out with friends. Loosley and Brine, seated a few rows behind, began eavesdropping and then verbally accosted the group, accusing them of misbehaving—though CCTV footage showed no wrongdoing by the teens.
Brine initiated the conflict by throwing her lipstick at the group and then physically grabbing the head of a teenage girl. When a teenage boy intervened to protect his friend, Loosley assaulted him, leaving him unconscious.
Both assailants exited the train at Newport while continuing to hurl abuse at the group.
The British Transport Police launched an immediate investigation, arresting Loosley and Brine the following day.
