MILLBROOK, Ala. — A 27-year-old man from Ariton, Alabama, was arrested in Millbrook and charged with a series of burglaries targeting a church and two local businesses.

Millbrook Police Chief P.K. Johnson confirmed that William Jefferies has been charged with three counts of third-degree burglary, theft of property in the third degree, two counts of theft of property in the fourth degree, two counts of fraudulent use of a credit/debit card, and third-degree criminal mischief. Jefferies is currently being held in the Elmore County Jail on a $100,000 bond.

The investigation began on August 9 when officers responded to a burglary report at a church located in the 5900 block of Main Street. The suspect reportedly stole a debit card belonging to the church and attempted to use it at various businesses.

Two days later, police responded to another burglary at a business on Deatsville Highway where electronics were stolen. The following day, another business in the same area was burglarized, and a cash box with money inside was taken.

After linking Jefferies to the crimes, police observed him driving and conducted a traffic stop. During the stop, officers recovered stolen property from one of the businesses. Following his arrest and interview, detectives believe more charges could be filed as their investigation continues.

In a humorous comment, Chief Johnson noted that Jefferies was wearing a shirt with the words “Not Today” on it during his booking photo. Johnson remarked that the shirt was a fitting choice considering the circumstances, stating, “Because, that’s the way our officers feel when responding to and investigating crimes of this nature, NOT TODAY!”
