NEWNAN, Ga. — Newnan police have arrested a Carroll County couple accused of running an organized receipt fraud scheme, a crime officers say becomes more common during busy shopping seasons.
Investigators say the suspects used old, stolen, or counterfeit receipts to fraudulently return merchandise at major retail stores. During the arrest, officers reportedly recovered multiple bags filled with receipts from large retail chains, along with a receipt printer believed to be used to create fake Target receipts.
Police identified the suspects as 45-year-old Whitney Marie Adams and 47-year-old Jonathan Quinton Adams, both from Carroll County. Authorities say the pair would select items listed on the receipts, then attempt to return them as if they had been previously purchased.
The scheme unraveled when a Target employee in Newnan recognized Whitney Adams during a return attempt. Police say the employee had prior knowledge of Adams from working at a Target store in Carrollton.
Both suspects are now facing multiple felony charges. Newnan Police are urging retailers to remain vigilant and closely monitor return transactions, especially during peak shopping periods.
