WHITE CASTLE, La. (WAFB) — A longtime town clerk in White Castle, Louisiana, has been arrested for allegedly stealing public funds and misusing her position.

Monica Allen Lee, 52, who has worked for the Town of White Castle for 27 years and served as town clerk for the past 11 years, was arrested on Friday, May 23. She faces charges of felony theft, attempted felony theft, and malfeasance in office, officials said.

According to investigators, Lee is accused of depositing checks meant for the town into her personal checking account, totaling $2,700. The scheme came to light after a local bank flagged suspicious transactions and alerted authorities when Lee attempted to deposit additional checks.

White Castle officials confirmed that no other town employees were involved, and that Lee has indicated her intention to resign in communication with the mayor.

Lee was booked into the Iberville Parish Jail, and the investigation is ongoing.
