BUNCOMBE COUNTY, NC — Nine individuals have been arrested and charged in connection to a sophisticated fraud ring operating across Western North Carolina, authorities confirmed this week.
According to the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office, the group targeted the U.S. mail, stealing checks, then “washing” and forging them with new recipient names — including that of a primary suspect.
Investigators identified Wesley Mcrary and Angela Queen as the ringleaders of the operation. Both now face serious charges, including trafficking stolen identities, larceny, and credit card fraud, along with multiple related offenses.
Also arrested in the scheme are:
Allison Wilson
Billi Jo Mizelle
Meagan Camp
Raquis Mills
Brittany Payton
Helen Lindsey
Krystle Hall
These individuals face various charges, including forgery, identity theft, and criminal conspiracy.
The sheriff’s office said it recovered a large quantity of stolen mail, washed checks, and fraudulent credit cards during the investigation. Authorities continue to urge the public to monitor their mail closely and report any suspicious activity.
