WATERBURY, CONN. — John Irizary, 56, of Waterbury, has been arrested in connection with a domestic-related shooting that occurred on April 10, 2025, at a residence on Berkley Avenue.
Police responded to the scene around 10:45 p.m., where they found a 44-year-old woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported to a nearby hospital and is currently in stable but critical condition. Irizary’s son, who was also present at the home, was not injured.
Details surrounding the cause of the shooting remain unclear, and officers spent several hours investigating the scene. By 4 a.m. on Friday, police had cleared the area and recovered the firearm used in the shooting.
The investigation prompted a significant police presence in the neighborhood, including the establishment of a perimeter and the deployment of long guns as officers worked to secure the scene, which was located near Waterbury Career Academy.
Irizary was arrested and charged with first-degree assault, tampering with evidence, criminal use of a firearm, criminal attempt at murder, illegal discharge of a firearm, first-degree reckless endangerment, and criminal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Police also revealed that Irizary does not hold a valid Connecticut pistol permit and is a convicted felon with a history of firearms-related convictions.
