BLOUNT COUNTY, Ala. (WBMA) — Gary Michael Stewart, 39, of Warrior, has been convicted of two counts of sexual abuse of a child under the age of twelve and one count of sexual abuse in the second degree.

According to prosecutors, the abuse began when the victim was approximately five years old and continued until she was about 13.

Sexual abuse of a child under twelve is a Class B felony in Alabama, punishable by up to 20 years in prison. The charge of sexual abuse in the second degree is a Class A misdemeanor, carrying a maximum sentence of one year in jail.

District Attorney Pamela L. Casey reaffirmed her office’s commitment to protecting children, stating, “We always have been. We always will be. We will prosecute perpetrators of child sexual abuse.” She also praised the victim’s courage, highlighting the difficulties survivors often face from family and society.

The investigation was led by Sergeant Ed Hull of the Blount County Sheriff’s Department, with support from the Blount County Children’s Center.

Stewart was remanded to the custody of the Blount County Sheriff. Sentencing is scheduled for July 17, 2025.

The trial was held as a non-jury proceeding at Stewart’s request.
