PLAQUEMINE, La. (WAFB) — Plaquemine City Councilwoman Wanda Jones turned herself in to authorities after being accused of multiple felony election-related offenses, according to jail and law enforcement records.
Jones was arrested and booked into the Iberville Parish Jail on Thursday, Jan. 22. She is facing five felony charges stemming from allegations that she submitted ineligible voter registration applications to the Iberville Parish Registrar of Voters.
Sources said Jones allegedly provided at least 28 voter applications for individuals who did not reside within Plaquemine city limits. Some of those individuals were reportedly family members who lived out of state. Authorities said the alleged actions occurred ahead of Jones’ 2024 re-election campaign to the Plaquemine Board of Selectmen.
Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi said the matter came to light after a staff member at the Registrar of Voters office flagged irregularities and reported them to a supervisor. The information was then forwarded to the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office, triggering a formal investigation.
According to Sheriff Stassi, the Secretary of State’s Office later determined the voter applications were ineligible, prompting law enforcement to pursue felony charges. Stassi confirmed that his office had been in communication with Jones prior to her surrender.
Authorities emphasized that the case remains under investigation. As with all criminal matters, Jones is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
