Walter Ringfield Arrested for Theft After Stolen Security Fob Incident

Suspect had previous arrest for cash theft at grocery store

A temporary election worker in Maricopa County, Arizona, has been arrested after allegedly stealing a “digital magnetic key” from a tabulation center, just months after being arrested for a similar crime at a local grocery store. Walter Ringfield, 27, was captured on surveillance video taking the key from the Maricopa County Elections building, prompting an investigation by authorities.

Ringfield had been previously arrested on September 30, 2023, for theft after allegedly taking $1,800 in cash from a grocery store register. Surveillance footage revealed that Ringfield pocketed the cash over several transactions. He later admitted to taking the money, citing financial struggles. Despite this, he was able to work as a temporary election staff member, which raised concerns about the effectiveness of criminal background checks.

During a press conference, Maricopa County Supervisor Bill Gates confirmed that Ringfield was in a felony diversion program at the time of his hiring and that this information was not flagged in the criminal background check. “We do a criminal background check for all of our temporary employees, and we did not find this,” Gates said, emphasizing the importance of security for election staff.

Ringfield’s most recent arrest on the election property involved the theft of a security fob, a crucial tool used for secure tabulation during elections. The fob was taken in broad daylight while Ringfield was on duty, and although he initially denied the theft, it was later found in his possession after a search of his vehicle and home. The stolen fob is said to have cost the county over $19,000 to reprogram, further disrupting the upcoming election preparations.

Maricopa County Sheriff Russ Skinner stated that investigators are still reviewing evidence to determine if the theft was politically motivated, though they have not found any direct indication of such a link.

Ringfield, who was fired from his temporary position, is facing multiple charges, including theft and possession of stolen property. Authorities urge anyone with information about the case to come forward.
