WAKE FOREST, NC — The Wake Forest community is grieving the loss of Ericka Ruffin Lucas, 56, a respected former high school principal and the wife of a well-known local football coach, after she succumbed to injuries from a tragic shooting incident.

Lucas was shot on August 29 near her home on East Nelson Avenue, and passed away from her injuries on Tuesday, according to the Wake Forest Police Department, as reported by WRAL. She was formerly the principal of Rolesville High School and the wife of Reggie Lucas, head football coach at Wake Forest High School.

Police have arrested two teenagers in connection with the shooting. Dexter Lamont Mills, 18, and a 16-year-old juvenile have both been charged with murder, police confirmed, according to CBS17. Investigators believe Lucas was not the intended target, and preliminary findings suggest she was caught in the crossfire during an altercation between others.

Mills is currently being held without bond and is awaiting a court appearance. The 16-year-old’s name has not been released due to their age.
