A robbery suspect, Vishwajeet Singh, alias BD, was arrested by Kanpur police after an encounter in the Chakeri police station area early on Friday. Singh, a resident of Chakeri, had been on the run since committing a car and motorcycle robbery in December 2024. While his accomplices were arrested earlier, Singh had managed to evade capture until now.

During the police operation, Singh attempted to flee and fired at the officers with the intent to kill. In the ensuing retaliatory action by the police, Singh was shot in the leg and was subsequently arrested. The police recovered an illegal 315 bore firearm, a live cartridge, and a motorcycle from him.

According to DCP East Shrawan Kumar Singh, a tip-off led the Chakeri police and the surveillance team to corner Singh near the railway underpass on Alaknanda Road around 4 a.m. on Friday. After being shot, Singh was hospitalized and is currently under medical care.
