Ahmedabad: The shocking murder of Vaibhav Manwani, 25, near the Narmada canal in Adalaj has been linked to a notorious serial offender, Vipul Parmar, 24, who preyed on couples at isolated spots to rob them. Parmar was arrested by the crime branch after allegedly stabbing Manwani to death during a robbery attempt near the Ambapur canal.
Manwani, a resident of Hansol, was with a female friend after celebrating his birthday when the attack occurred. Parmar, originally from Banshi Chawl, Naroda, and currently residing in Dehgam, was caught in Rajkot and formally arrested on Tuesday.
The police revealed Parmar’s extensive criminal record, which includes 14 offences such as attempted murder in Nikol (2020), multiple cases of robbery, dacoity, theft, and burglary across Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Anand.
Authorities suspect Parmar targeted couples at remote locations, with many crimes potentially unreported due to social stigma. The case came to light when Manwani’s companion survived the stabbing and filed a complaint.
According to her FIR, the duo was sitting in their car near the canal road when Parmar suddenly appeared with a knife, demanding valuables. When Manwani resisted, Parmar stabbed him. The woman was also injured but managed to escape, flag down help, and contact her family.
Manwani died at the scene. Parmar fled in Manwani’s car but had to abandon it after it broke down. CCTV footage and the survivor’s testimony helped police track and apprehend Parmar.
Parmar’s family had distanced themselves from him due to his criminal activities. He now faces charges of murder, robbery, and assault.
