LOS ANGELES — A Glendale physician has been federally charged for allegedly submitting over $45 million in fraudulent Medicare claims for Botox treatments that were medically unnecessary or never administered, officials announced.
Violetta Mailyan, 45, was indicted Wednesday in Los Angeles federal court on nine counts of wire fraud and three counts of obstructing a criminal investigation into health care offenses, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Mailyan operated Healthy Way Medical Center in Glendale, which allegedly billed Medicare for Botox injections on dates when Mailyan was traveling abroad, when patients were unavailable, or when the clinic was closed. Authorities also allege she submitted falsified documents in an attempt to impede the investigation.
If convicted, Mailyan faces up to 20 years in prison for each wire fraud count and five years for each obstruction count. She was first indicted on nine wire fraud charges on October 15 and pleaded not guilty two days later.
