In a tragic hit-and-run case, Vijay Vaghji Desai, son of a police head constable, has been arrested for allegedly ramming his Mercedes into a two-wheeler, leaving 27-year-old state-level footballer Andrerahul Raymond Bhatia critically injured.
The incident occurred between May 14 and 15 on a flyover near Palladium Mall. Bhatia was returning from dinner with a friend when a speeding black sedan struck his two-wheeler from behind. Bhatia sustained severe head injuries, including a skull fracture and brain hemorrhage, and remains on life support in the ICU at Apollo Hospital.
The suspect fled the scene, but police traced him using the Mercedes logo that had detached during the crash. The logo was matched with vehicle records, leading investigators to Vijay Desai, who had purchased the car in March.
According to the FIR, another two-wheeler rider collided with bystanders after the crash, causing further injuries.
Desai was arrested on Thursday and is expected to be produced in court. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic West) Neeta Desai confirmed the breakthrough was made through forensic tracking of the car part.
Police say Desai’s father is posted with Ahmedabad Police. The case has drawn public attention due to the victim’s condition and the accused’s family background.
