Durham County Caregiver Arrested for Exploiting Elderly Client

A Durham County caregiver, Victoria Lowery, has been arrested and charged with multiple felonies after allegedly exploiting a vulnerable elderly woman under her care.

According to the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, 33-year-old Lowery was taken into custody following a complaint from the client’s daughter. In mid-July, the daughter reported several missing checks from her mother’s checkbook and found that three of them had already been cashed — with the payee identified as the former caregiver.

Lowery, who worked for Lilies of Hope Health Agency based in Lumberton, was named as the suspect. Further investigation also revealed several bottles of the victim’s prescription medications were missing.

On Tuesday, deputies arrested Lowery at her home in Red Springs. She faces charges including:

One count of exploitation of an elderly/disabled adult

Three counts of uttering forged endorsement

One count of obtaining property by false pretense

Lowery is scheduled to make her first court appearance on Thursday.
