In a swift and commendable operation, Meghaninagar Police arrested 38-year-old Suchi Prakashbhai Rai, the vice-principal of Shubham Nursing College, for stealing Rs2.36 lakh in cash from her own institute.

The theft, committed to recover heavy losses from online rummy gaming, had initially puzzled investigators. The case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Meghaninagar police station.

Following directives from senior officials, a special surveillance team examined CCTV footage and conducted ground-level inquiries, leading to Rai’s arrest on July 23 at 12:20 pm.

Rai, a resident of Shahibaug and originally from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, had reportedly stolen Rs8 lakh over time. CCTV footage revealed the accused committing theft disguised in a black veil (burkha). Investigators noted distinct features, including her eyewear and unique thumb and toe prints, which helped identify her despite the disguise.

Despite earning a monthly salary of Rs47,000, Rai had been addicted to online gaming for five to six months and suffered significant financial losses. The theft was a desperate attempt to offset these losses.

College authorities grew suspicious after noticing discrepancies in funds and reviewing surveillance footage. Rai later confessed to the crime during intense interrogation.

The police are continuing investigations to see if Rai was involved in similar offenses. The case highlights concerns over the impact of online gaming addiction on individuals and institutions.
