JACKSON, Miss. – Vernell Survillion, a Quitman County man and owner of several rental properties, has been arrested for submitting fraudulent applications to the Rental Assistance for Mississippians Program (RAMP). The program, which is managed by the Mississippi Home Corporation (MHC), was designed to assist tenants who are struggling with rent payments.
Survillion is accused of submitting false applications for rental assistance on behalf of tenants renting from him. The applications reportedly included falsified details, such as forged signatures, inflated rental amounts, inflated delinquency months, and inaccurate occupant information. As a result, Survillion allegedly received $16,050 in payments from MHC.
State Auditor Shad White emphasized the importance of ensuring tax dollars are spent appropriately, stating, “As long as the legislature leaves us with the ability to audit, we will continue holding the line to make sure your tax dollars are spent properly.”
Survillion now faces serious legal consequences. If convicted, he could be fined up to $10,000 and sentenced to up to 5 years in prison. As with all individuals arrested by the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor, Survillion is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
