The investigation into the gruesome Guwahati double murder has progressed rapidly following the arrest of three individuals in Assam.
The prime accused, Vandana Kalita, along with her friends Arup Deka and Dhanti Deka, are alleged to have murdered her mother-in-law, Sanskari Dey, and her husband, Amarjyoti Dey, before dismembering the bodies and dumping the parts at multiple locations in Meghalaya.
On February 21 and 22, Assam police recovered the body parts from Sohra (Cherrapunji) and Dawki, confirming the horrific nature of the crime. Vandana Kalita had direct familial ties to the victims, with Sanskari Dey being her mother-in-law and Amarjyoti her husband.
Investigations suggest that the murders were influenced by an extramarital relationship between Vandana Kalita and co-accused Dhanti Deka, as well as a possible financial motive. Vandana allegedly withdrew significant sums of money using her mother-in-law’s ATM card following the murders.
Vandana, with the help of Arup and Dhanti Deka, reportedly suffocated Sanskari Dey with a pillow before fatally attacking her with a machete and rolling pin. Her husband, Amarjyoti Dey, was struck on the head with an iron rod.
Police are also examining a property angle, as Sanskari Dey, a retired government employee, owned several properties in Chandmari and Noonmati, Guwahati. Reports indicate that both victims had marital disagreements with Vandana Kalita, and Amarjyoti allegedly had extramarital relationships, further complicating the motive.
With the arrest of Vandana Kalita and her accomplices, authorities now aim to unravel all aspects of this heinous crime, including the financial and property-related motives.
