In a significant drug trafficking bust, Punjab Police arrested two brothers from Uttar Pradesh on Saturday for trafficking 4.2 kg of opium. The suspects, identified as Wasim (24) and Rafique (40), both residents of Fazilpur, Sujanpur, in Aligarh district, were caught by the police team near Adda Ladra in Bhogpur, along the Jammu-Jalandhar highway, while en route to Hoshiarpur.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harvinder Singh Virk, the brothers were using public transport to smuggle and distribute narcotics across Punjab. The police team intercepted them as they were on their way to deliver the opium consignment. A case has been registered at the Bhogpur police station under Sections 18(c), 61, and 85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The brothers have been taken into custody for further interrogation. Authorities are now working to trace the source of the opium and identify the intended buyers. The police believe the duo is part of a larger narcotics trafficking network operating in the region.
This arrest marks a significant step in the ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking in Punjab, which has seen a rise in narcotics smuggling in recent years.
