by Sophia Bennett

LAFAYETTE COUNTY, Miss. — Two Lafayette County residents have been charged with felony child abuse following an investigation into serious unexplained injuries suffered by a 1-year-old child.

On Friday, May 30, deputies from the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office were called to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford after medical staff reported multiple injuries on a toddler. Due to the severity of the child’s condition, the victim was transported to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis.

Following a thorough investigation, authorities arrested Uriel Cruz, 26, and Teresa Mendez, 25, charging both with two counts of felony child abuse.

The pair was booked into the Lafayette County Detention Center and brought before the Lafayette County Court on Monday for their initial appearance. The district attorney’s office has filed a motion to deny bond, and both Cruz and Mendez will remain in custody pending a future bond hearing.

Due to the involvement of a juvenile, no further information has been released at this time.
