A serving Uttar Pradesh Police constable was arrested in Preet Vihar, east Delhi, for allegedly stealing a motorcycle to clear his gambling debts, police said on Sunday.
The accused, Mohammed Mohseen (27), a 2019-batch official posted with the 44th Battalion of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) in Meerut, was caught during a patrol in Rajdhani Enclave Market earlier this week.
Police recovered two master keys from Mohseen, which he allegedly used to unlock parked motorcycles. He confessed to stealing a Hero Splendor bike from Preet Vihar in May, a claim supported by CCTV footage from the day of the theft, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (East), Abhishek Dhania.
Further investigation traced the stolen motorcycle to a man in Meerut who said he purchased it from Mohseen through social media. Police noted that the bike’s engine and chassis numbers had been tampered with to conceal its origin.
Dhania added that Mohseen, who is married and addicted to gambling, has prior vehicle theft cases. “He targeted parked two-wheelers in Delhi using master keys and sold them in Uttar Pradesh through personal contacts and social media to pay off his gambling debts,” the DCP explained.
Mohseen was arrested under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Further investigation is ongoing.
