Police arrested a thief named Gulfam after a brief encounter near Mahua village turn in the Sunahla Chauki area of Maharajpur, early Thursday, in connection with the Nov 1 jewellery shop robbery.
On November 1, two masked men on a motorcycle entered a highway-side jewellery shop and fled with jewellery worth over Rs 32 lakh and Rs 65,000 in cash. CCTV footage from the shop captured all three accused.
Following a complaint by jeweller Bholendra Verma, police registered a case and formed 10 teams, including Crime Branch and surveillance units, to track the suspects.
During a night patrol early Thursday, officers from the Gangaghat police station spotted a suspicious youth near Mahua Gaon turn. When asked to stop, the suspect allegedly opened fire at the police team. The cops retaliated, and the accused was shot in the leg, arrested, and taken to the hospital for treatment.
Maharajpur police station in-charge Rajesh Kumar confirmed the accused’s identity as Gulfam, a local resident of the Gangaghat police station area in Unnao. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects.
