MIAMI, FL — A 23-year-old woman, identified as Shanetta Chantell Gilbert, has been arrested in connection with a fatal crash that killed a man riding an electric scooter in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood over the weekend.
The collision happened shortly after 3 p.m. on Saturday at the intersection of Northwest 54th Street and Northwest Fifth Avenue, police said.
According to investigators, Gilbert was driving a 2008 Nissan Altima eastbound on Northwest 54th Street when the victim, riding a scooter westbound on the shoulder, made a sudden left turn across traffic.
Authorities say the scooter rider violated Gilbert’s right of way, resulting in a crash that threw the man into the westbound lanes.
Emergency responders rushed the victim to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where he was listed in critical condition with multiple severe injuries, including a traumatic brain injury, evisceration to the abdomen, and broken bones.
The man later died from his injuries, police confirmed Tuesday. His identity has not been released.
Although early reports suggested a hit-and-run, Gilbert remained at the scene and cooperated with police.
However, officers discovered she had never obtained a valid driver’s license.
She was arrested and charged with not having a valid license in a crash involving death, a serious offense under Florida law. As of Tuesday, Gilbert was not listed in custody on the Miami-Dade Corrections website.
The investigation remains ongoing.
