On Sunday, Malkangiri police arrested 20-year-old Umesh Nag, the boyfriend of 25-year-old Mangaldei Nag, following her alleged murder, which police believe was committed to conceal her pregnancy.
The incident came to light after a decomposed, unidentified female body was discovered in the Sunatang jungle near Rengabandha village on April 12, 2025. In response, an Unnatural Death (UD) case (No. 21/2-25) was registered by the Malkangiri police.
Following a post-mortem examination and further investigation, authorities gathered evidence that led them to treat the case as a cognizable offense. The victim’s identity was confirmed through cross-verification of missing persons’ reports from a neighboring police station in Chhattisgarh, along with technical data analysis. The victim’s family later identified her based on her clothing and personal items.
Investigations revealed that Umesh Nag and Mangaldei had been in a romantic relationship for the past year. According to preliminary reports, the two had been involved in a physical relationship, which Umesh had tried to keep secret. When Mangaldei became pregnant, the situation became public, and Umesh reportedly insisted on terminating the pregnancy.
On March 20, 2025, Umesh allegedly took Mangaldei to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Malkangiri for an ultrasound and abortion. However, the attending medical officer refused to perform the procedure.
Police allege that following this hospital visit, Umesh took Mangaldei to the forest area where he murdered her, allegedly to avoid the consequences of her pregnancy. He then attempted to destroy evidence to cover his tracks.
The investigation into the case is ongoing, with authorities working to gather further evidence.
