A 44-year-old man has been arrested for snatching a gold chain from an elderly woman in Kalady on Tuesday. The accused, identified as Umesh, is a resident of Cheranalloor.
According to police, Umesh approached the woman on his motorcycle, pretending to ask for directions. As she responded, he suddenly snatched her gold chain, which weighed around 1.5 sovereigns, and fled the scene.
Following a swift investigation, police traced and arrested the suspect. The stolen ornament was recovered from a financing firm near Cheranalloor, where Umesh had pledged it for money. Officers also seized the motorcycle, helmet, raincoat, and mask he used during the theft.
The accused was produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody.
Police confirmed that Umesh is a habitual offender with around 10 theft cases registered against him at Varapuzha, Cheranalloor, Binanipuram, North Paravur, and Aluva police stations.
The investigation team included Inspector Anilkumar T. Meppilly, SIs Josy M. Johnson, Shyam, Sudheer, Rejimon, Unni, ASI Prasad, and CPOs Eldos and Dhanesh.
