ATLANTA (WANF/Gray News) — A Georgia Uber driver has been arrested after allegedly shooting a teenage girl during a dispute outside a Waffle House early Sunday morning.
Police say the incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. at the Waffle House on Chamblee Dunwoody Road.
According to investigators, five teenage girls had ordered an Uber to take them home from the restaurant. When the driver, 38-year-old Meredith Grundy, arrived, he told the group that he could only take four passengers due to space limitations.
The disagreement quickly escalated, and police say one of the girls allegedly slapped Grundy and threatened to kill him. Grundy then fired his weapon, hitting the 16-year-old girl in the back and both legs.
The other four teens disputed Grundy’s account, claiming that the shooting happened before any physical altercation or threats occurred.
The victim was transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where she remains in critical but stable condition. Her family declined to comment on the case.
Grundy was arrested and booked into the DeKalb County Jail on charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, according to Dunwoody Police Sgt. Michael Cheek.
Cheek said investigators have not yet decided whether the teen will face any charges, noting that her medical care is the immediate priority.
Court records show Grundy does not yet have an attorney.
Uber responded to the incident, calling the reported details “horrifying” and confirming that Grundy’s access to the platform has been revoked. The company said it is cooperating with law enforcement during the ongoing investigation.
