WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — A Forsyth County man, Tyree Ray Long, 28, has been sentenced to 37 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to a series of violent felonies, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
The charges stem from an April 2022 domestic violence incident and a subsequent shootout with law enforcement. On April 21, Long reportedly fired multiple shots at his girlfriend and her daughter as they attempted to leave their home after an argument. The bullets struck the car four times, though no one was injured.
The next day, the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force located Long at a hotel in Winston-Salem. As officers approached, Long was seen in a Ford Fusion. Despite commands to surrender, he rammed two law enforcement vehicles—one occupied by a U.S. Marshal—and led officers on a dangerous three-mile high-speed chase through business and residential zones, including near Wake Forest University student housing.
During the pursuit, Long fired at officers approximately ten times from his vehicle. After the chase ended in a crash, he fled on foot, firing again at pursuing officers before being arrested.
Long pleaded guilty in August to:
Felon in possession of a firearm
Assault on a federal officer with a deadly weapon
Discharging a firearm during a crime of violence
He received the following sentences:
10 years for illegal firearm possession
17 years for assault on a federal officer
10 years for discharging a firearm at law enforcement
These sentences will run consecutively, totaling 37 years in federal prison.
