Two South African nationals have been arrested in Ho Chi Minh City on drug-related charges after suspicions raised by two drivers led to a police investigation. Lykert Bevan Dean, 37, faces charges for illegal drug sales, while Rohde Reinart, 30, is accused of organizing illicit drug use.
The case came to light on May 15, 2024, when the two drivers were instructed to deliver packages from an apartment at Van Do Residence in District 4 to Thu Duc City and Binh Thanh District. Upon receiving the packages, the drivers noticed suspicious signs and immediately reported their concerns to the authorities. Police later discovered that the packages contained a total of 23.829 grams of cannabis.
Following the discovery, the police conducted a search of Apartment 14.10 at Van Do Residence, which led to the seizure of an additional 68.72 grams of cannabis. Both Dean and Reinart, who had been renting the apartment since August 2023, were promptly arrested.
Further investigations revealed that in September 2023, Dean had allegedly bought cannabis from an unidentified individual on Bui Vien Street in District 1 for personal use. Reinart then approached Dean to buy some cannabis and purchased around 5 grams on two separate occasions, paying 1 million VND (approximately $39 USD) each time.
However, Reinart stopped buying from Dean when he found cheaper options through other drug dealers on Bui Vien Street. Reinart began purchasing cannabis directly from these dealers for both personal use and for his girlfriend.
Both men are currently under arrest as authorities continue their investigation into the drug activities.
