RENO, Nev. (KOLO) — Luis Chavez-Navarro and Luisa Cardona-Valle have been sentenced to prison after being convicted for trafficking fentanyl and methamphetamine in Reno, Nevada.

Details of the Case:
Both Chavez-Navarro and Cardona-Valle were sentenced after pleading guilty to trafficking controlled substances. Chavez-Navarro, who was found to have nearly nine pounds of fentanyl and two pounds of methamphetamine, received a prison sentence of 10 to 25 years. Cardona-Valle was sentenced to 8 to 20 years.

The investigation began in January 2024, when local law enforcement authorities, including the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Reno Police Department, and Sparks Police Department, joined forces after receiving information that fentanyl was being sold locally by a group of Honduran traffickers from the Bay Area.

Undercover Operation:
In response, police organized an undercover operation, during which Chavez-Navarro agreed to sell nearly nine pounds of fentanyl and two pounds of methamphetamine. During the operation, authorities learned that Cardona-Valle was often involved in the trafficking activities alongside Chavez-Navarro.

The Arrest:
On January 23, 2024, both suspects were arrested after they arrived to deliver the drugs. A search of their vehicle uncovered the fentanyl and methamphetamine hidden inside the car, as well as in a hidden compartment.

The Sentencing:
Following their arrests, both suspects were convicted and handed prison sentences, with Chavez-Navarro facing a longer sentence due to the large quantities of drugs involved. The convictions are part of a broader effort by local law enforcement to combat the growing problem of fentanyl trafficking in the region.
