The Crime Investigation Department (CID) has arrested two more accused in the high-profile inter-state human organ trafficking case, raising the total number of arrests to 15. The case revolves around illegal kidney transplants conducted at Alakananda Hospital in Saroornagar, which was busted earlier this year.
The latest arrests were made on May 26 in Chennai, where special CID teams apprehended Shankaran alias Sai Shankaran (56) and N Ramya (36) from Sangareddy. Authorities seized a passport and two mobile phones from them. Both suspects were remanded to judicial custody on Thursday.
According to CID officials, the duo supplied kidney donors for the illicit transplants. Their involvement was uncovered based on victim statements and corroborating evidence, including hotel stay records in Hyderabad.
Investigators revealed that the suspects lured poor individuals from Tamil Nadu to Hyderabad under false employment promises. For each illegal transplant, the accused received around Rs 10 lakh, paying Rs 4-5 lakh to the donors.
The case, initially registered at Saroornagar police station under sections of the BNS and the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, was transferred to the CID on April 24. The ongoing probe has uncovered a wider network involving suspects from Bengaluru. The CID team, led by SP S Srinivas, is actively tracking seven more accused who remain at large.
