In a major drug haul, police seized 102 kg of ganja and arrested two men near Anakaputhur on Thursday. The authorities also seized a Honda City car and two mobile phones from the suspects.
The accused, identified as Paraman, 45, from Madurai, and Daniel Raja, 34, from Usilampatti, were apprehended on Maduravoyal Bypass Road, near Anakaputhur, on Wednesday. Police revealed that Paraman had been involved in ganja smuggling since 2019. He had previously been arrested in Andhra Pradesh and had connections with ganja dealers from Narsipatnam in the Anakapalle district. His criminal history also includes theft, rioting, assault, and criminal intimidation charges.
Daniel Raja had a prior NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) case registered against him in Thirumangalam. Paraman and Daniel had teamed up to smuggle ganja from Andhra Pradesh to Tamil Nadu, hiding the contraband in secret compartments within the car.
According to police, Paraman was fluent in Telugu due to his past business dealings in Andhra Pradesh. He had been arrested during the 2024 elections with 10 kg of ganja and was sent to a jail in Visakhapatnam, where he became acquainted with local drug dealers. The duo used hilly regions along the Andhra Pradesh-Tamil Nadu border as storage hubs for their illicit operations.
