In a shocking case of police misconduct, two constables and a home guard were arrested in Trichy, Tamil Nadu, for allegedly assaulting and robbing a motorcyclist of Rs5,000 in June. Trichy Police Commissioner N. Kamini has suspended the constables and dismissed the home guard.
The accused are:
A Ashok Kumar (36) – patrol constable from TRP Nagar
V Punniyakumar (35) – armed reserve police driver from KK Nagar
R Veeramani (38) – home guard from Anna Nagar
According to police reports, P Pragadeeshwaran, a mechanic from Kulithalai, Karur district, ran out of fuel near Ariyamangalam on the night of June 13. When he sought help from the officers, they allegedly demanded Rs5,000 as a ‘fine’. After he refused, the accused allegedly assaulted him, took Rs4,000 in cash, and forced him to transfer Rs1,000 via UPI to the home guard’s account.
Pragadeeshwaran delayed filing a complaint due to fear of retribution but lodged it on Sunday at the Gandhi Market Police Station. Using the UPI transaction, police traced and arrested all three accused, who were booked under BNS sections 309-4 (robbery), 61-b (conspiracy), and 105-4 (voluntarily causing hurt). They have been remanded in Trichy Central Prison until August 29.
The case highlights serious abuse of power by law enforcement personnel, prompting swift administrative action by Commissioner Kamini.
