SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. — Two individuals were arrested on Monday, January 8, 2025, in connection with a porch pirate theft that occurred exactly one month earlier, on December 6, 2024. Leydis Vega, 30, of Hialeah, and Dariel Massip, 31, also of Hialeah, were apprehended after a month-long investigation into the theft of a package from the front of a home in the 6900 block of Southwest 63rd Avenue in South Miami.
According to the victim’s report, she was alerted to the theft when her neighbor found her empty package the following morning and returned it to her. Upon reviewing her surveillance footage, the victim saw Vega, later identified as the thief, taking the package from the porch before quickly getting into the passenger seat of a black Ford Mustang.
Surveillance Footage and Public Tip Leads to Arrest
After the surveillance footage was broadcasted on local news, Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers received a tip identifying the woman in the video as Leydis Vega. Detectives further investigated and noticed photos of Vega on her social media, where she was seen wearing the same hair bows as those she wore during the theft.
Additionally, police found that Vega’s driver’s license was registered to the same address as her ex-husband. When police visited the address on December 17, her ex-husband confirmed that Vega was indeed the person seen on the surveillance footage, saying, “Yes, I saw the news channel already. It’s her.”
Arrest and Charges
On January 8, 2025, Vega turned herself in to authorities and was arrested on charges of burglary and petit theft. She was taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, but as of the latest update, her bond had not been set due to a domestic violence warrant.
Meanwhile, Massip, the alleged getaway driver, was also arrested. He faces charges of criminal solicitation in connection with the incident. As of Tuesday afternoon, Massip was held at the Metrowest Detention Center. He was given a $2,500 bond for the porch piracy charge, but is being held without bond on other outstanding warrants.
The arrests of Vega and Massip conclude a successful investigation into the theft that has been widely publicized, with local authorities urging the public to remain vigilant against such crimes.
