PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Two men from Port St. Lucie were arrested on October 30 in connection with a scam in which they attempted to steal $20,000 from a California resident by impersonating a Chase Bank representative.
The victim reported on October 29 that he had received a call claiming his bank account was compromised. Following instructions from the scammers, he withdrew the cash, placed it in a yellow envelope, and mailed it via FedEx to what he thought was a local Chase Bank branch. After verifying the address, he realized it was not affiliated with the bank and contacted law enforcement.
Port St. Lucie Police intercepted the package at a FedEx facility before delivery. Detectives conducted surveillance at the delivery address and arrested Trey Michael Romans, 20, and Jean Philippe Dorcena, 25, when they arrived to retrieve the package.
Romans faces charges of grand theft, scheme to defraud, marijuana possession under 20 grams, and probation violation, while Dorcena was charged with grand theft, scheme to defraud, and unlawful use of a communication device.
Approximately 16.5 grams of marijuana were found in the SUV, and both men’s cell phones were seized to aid the investigation. The stolen money will be returned to the California victim via check.
