EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) — The Evansville Police Department has announced the arrest of two individuals in connection with the shooting death of 17-year-old Malachi Young. The incident occurred on Tuesday night around 10:30 p.m. at Tepe Park.

Police have identified the suspects as 16-year-old Santana Cooper and 17-year-old Lakai Snaden. According to an affidavit, surveillance footage from Tepe Park captured the two shooting and killing Young. Authorities were able to identify the suspects after they were seen with Young earlier in the day at a local mall.

Young’s aunt spoke with the media Wednesday morning, expressing the deep grief of losing her nephew. She shared that in addition to the family’s loss, Young’s week-old son has now tragically lost his father.

Young was a student at the Academy for Innovative Studies (AIS). In response to the tragedy, EVSC officials have provided counseling services to students and staff at the school.

Both Cooper and Snaden are currently held in the Vanderburgh County Jail without bond.
