Two conmen were arrested on Saturday by the Cyber Police Station in connection with a fraudulent scheme that duped an elderly woman out of Rs44 lakh. The fraudsters had pretended to help her claim an insurance payout for her late husband. A case was filed under the IT Act following the arrests.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Shubham Singh (28) from Gazipur district and Shivendra Sagar Mishra from Gonda. Shubham, a former employee of a private bank, had previously assisted the victim in claiming Rs10 lakh of insurance for her late husband. The elderly woman trusted him, which led to the scam.

According to Rajiv Tiwari, Inspector in charge at the Cyber Police Station, Shubham used his position to gain the woman’s confidence. She later confided in him that she wanted to claim a Rs44 lakh insurance amount from the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), following her husband’s death.

Shubham, in turn, involved his friend Shivendra, who works as a sales executive at a small finance bank. The duo manipulated the woman into opening a new bank account, but instead of registering her mobile number, they provided their own, to gain access to the transaction details.

Shubham and Shivendra then proceeded to fraudulently transfer the woman’s insurance payout to their own accounts. After an investigation, the police tracked down the duo—Shubham was living in Bharuch district (Gujarat), and Shivendra was residing in Gulmohar Colony (Lucknow).

Both suspects were arrested after being questioned by police, and the authorities are continuing their investigation into the matter. This case highlights the growing cyber fraud targeting vulnerable individuals, especially the elderly, and underscores the need for vigilance in financial dealings.
