Two men were arrested in Bangkok’s Si Phraya area yesterday, accused of stealing communication cables. Police apprehended the suspects, identified as Thaworn and Adisak, after observing suspicious behavior and inconsistent explanations for their presence at the scene.
The arrest took place near the Si Phraya-Charoen Krung intersection in the Bang Rak district. The officers, led by Police Lieutenant General Siam Boonsom, seized various theft tools, including two wire cutters, crowbars, hooks, and a torch, along with a blue Toyota Corolla with the registration number 3ณ9493.
The operation was triggered by reports from National Telecom Public Company Limited regarding a rise in cable thefts in the area. The thefts typically involved opening manhole covers, cutting the cables, and returning later to retrieve them. As a result, local authorities increased patrols to deter further incidents.
During their patrol, officers noticed a suspicious blue vehicle parked nearby. Upon questioning the occupants, Thaworn and Adisak, officers observed nervous behavior, such as avoiding eye contact and providing conflicting stories. Initially, the suspects claimed they were changing a flat tire, but their actions contradicted their explanation. Adisak later claimed he was urinating in the area, which further aroused suspicion.
Officers then noticed an ajar manhole cover, prompting them to search the suspects and their vehicle. While Thaworn was found without illegal items, Adisak was carrying an orange wire cutter hidden in his trousers. A more detailed search of the vehicle revealed additional tools commonly used for cable theft.
Both men were charged with attempted joint theft at night using a vehicle. They were handed over to investigators for further legal proceedings, along with the seized items.
