HOUSTON, TX — A Texas Southern University student has been arrested and charged with murder following the fatal shooting of former TSU football player Tyler Martinez, 24, at an apartment complex in Houston on Friday.
The suspect, Jasper Robinson, 22, is charged with first-degree murder and is currently held in the Harris County Jail on $200,000 bond. According to court documents, Robinson, a full-time TSU student, returned to the scene and confessed to the crime.
Police responded to reports of a shooting at the Mac 4660 Apartments, where they found Martinez suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Witnesses reported that a fight broke out between Robinson and Martinez, both residents of the complex. During the altercation, a woman associated with Robinson allegedly retrieved a firearm from a nearby vehicle and handed it to him.
Witnesses say that although Martinez had initially been on top of Robinson during the fight, he walked away before Robinson shot him three times in the torso.
Martinez, a former defensive tackle for Texas Southern University, played four seasons for the Tigers from 2019 to 2023 under coach Clarence McKinney. He made 20 appearances, recording 57 tackles, four sacks, and five tackles for a loss.
Robinson is scheduled for a court appearance on Tuesday.
