WARREN, Ohio — A Campbell man is facing a felony charge following a violent stabbing at a Warren motel that left one man hospitalized.
Troy McGinnis, 37, of Fifth Street in Campbell, was arrested Saturday and charged with felonious assault, a second-degree felony. He pleaded not guilty Monday in Warren Municipal Court, where Judge Natasha K. Natale set his bond at $250,000. A no-contact order was issued, barring McGinnis from contacting the victim or returning to the Riverview Motel. His next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday.
The incident occurred around 4:04 p.m. Saturday at the Riverview Motel, located at 3060 Parkman Road NW. Officers arrived to find the victim, Charles Edwards Krause, suffering from at least five stab wounds to his chest, arm, upper leg, and buttock. His injuries were considered non-life-threatening, and he was transported to St. Joseph Warren Hospital.
According to police, the altercation stemmed from a dispute over a dog that had been exchanged for money. Krause told officers that McGinnis came to retrieve the dog, leading to an argument. When Krause tried to walk past him, he was allegedly struck and then stabbed multiple times after attempting to defend himself.
Security footage showed the suspect leaving the crime scene and briefly entering another room at the motel. A tip later led officers to a nearby gas station, where McGinnis was found crouching near the corner of the building.
He was wearing a black T-shirt with white lettering, a black winter cap, and a blue headwrap, and was carrying a backpack wrapped with a black hoodie.
Inside the backpack, police discovered:
A large machete
Bolt cutter
Baseball bat
Binoculars
Female jewelry
Two watches
Drug paraphernalia
A motel key
A 3-inch folding pocket knife believed to be the weapon used
The knife had been recently cleaned, leaving an oily film on the blade. It was collected for DNA testing.
McGinnis was interviewed at the Warren Police Department and then booked into the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office jail.
