Tower Hamlets Councillor Abdul Malik, aged 50, has been formally charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice in connection with an ongoing rape investigation.

Malik, who represents the ruling Aspire Party as a councillor for Blackwall and Cubitt Town, is accused of interfering with a police inquiry into the alleged rape of a 16-year-old girl.

The Allegations
The charge, which was listed at Thames Magistrates’ Court last week, alleges that on January 23, Cllr Malik contacted the father of the teenage rape complainant and pressured him to convince his daughter to drop the charges. The allegation also includes Malik’s attempt to have the male suspect released from custody.

Upcoming Court Hearing
The case has now been escalated to Snaresbrook Crown Court, where a plea hearing is scheduled for March 14. Cllr Malik, who resides in Poplar, has not yet entered a plea.

Cllr Malik’s Role in Tower Hamlets
Abdul Malik has served as a councillor in Tower Hamlets three times, first elected in 2010, then again in 2018, and most recently in 2022. He currently holds the position of Chair of the Council’s Human Resources Committee and is also a member of the Licensing Committee. In addition to his council duties, Malik is a director at Castalia Food and Grocery Store on the Isle of Dogs.

Given his significant role in local governance, questions have arisen about Malik’s ongoing participation in council activities amid these serious allegations.

Council’s Response
When contacted regarding Cllr Malik’s status, Tower Hamlets Council stated:
“Due to active legal proceedings, we are unable to comment on the case.”
The council did not offer clarity on whether Cllr Malik is continuing to fulfill his council responsibilities during this time.

Community Reactions and Legal Implications
The news of Cllr Malik’s charges has caused concern in the Tower Hamlets community, where residents have expressed worries about the integrity of public officials. Many are calling for transparency and swift action if the allegations are substantiated.

Legal experts emphasize that charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice carry severe consequences, including the potential for a custodial sentence upon conviction.

As the plea hearing approaches, The Sentinel Current will continue to provide updates on the case and any developments regarding Cllr Malik’s role within Tower Hamlets Council.
