TOKYO — Tokyo police have arrested 21-year-old Toru Ozaki on suspicion of stealing ¥2.2 million worth of jewelry from a store in the Ueno district.

According to police, Ozaki allegedly stole a diamond necklace last Friday after entering the store with another man. They asked to try on the necklace, but Ozaki fled the store wearing it. An employee chased him and detained him approximately 240 meters away.

Ozaki has denied the charges, claiming, “I was simply invited by a friend to have a cigarette and left the store,” according to police statements. The other man involved remains at large.

Authorities are also questioning Ozaki about a similar theft that occurred about a week ago in Taito Ward, where watches and other items were reported stolen. The investigation into his possible involvement continues.
