MONROE COUNTY, Ga. (41NBC/WMGT) — A Monroe County man accused of scamming someone out of $35,000 in a fraudulent land sale was arrested Monday during an undercover operation, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies began investigating the same day after receiving a report of a potential land scam. After interviewing the victim, investigators identified Tommy Thomason as the suspect. He allegedly sold the victim a piece of land that he did not legally own.

To catch Thomason, investigators arranged a meeting at the property in question. An undercover officer, posing as a friend of the victim, accompanied the victim to meet Thomason. Following the staged meeting, investigators moved in and arrested Thomason at the scene without incident.

He was booked into the Monroe County Jail, but as of Thursday night, online jail records show he is no longer in custody. Authorities have not yet provided further details on charges or court dates.

The case remains under investigation.
