Tinsukia police made significant headway in the battle against drug trafficking by arresting two drug smugglers and a local peddler on Friday. The operation led to the interception of a large heroin consignment being transported from Nagaland into Assam.
The primary suspects, Bitu Gohain and Natey Ekka, were apprehended near the New Tinsukia Railway Station shortly after arriving from Dimapur on the Avadh Assam Express at 12:10 pm. Acting on intelligence inputs, the police team, led by Tinsukia Additional SP (Crime) Nishant Saurabh, swiftly executed the operation.
“Both suspects have been charged under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1988,” said Saurabh. The police recovered four plastic bags containing heroin from their possession.
Following the initial arrests and subsequent confessions, the police conducted a follow-up operation in the Dohutia Chuk area of Tinsukia. This led to the arrest of a local drug peddler, Biki Bora, who was also found in possession of illegal substances, further dismantling the drug network operating in the region.
