Timothy Cherry Arrested in Fatal Shooting of Russell Whipple

JSO investigates May 10 Southside shooting; Cherry charged with murder

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) is investigating a fatal shooting that took place on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at approximately 9:00 PM on Dorothea Road in the Southside area.

Responding District 3 patrol officers found 69-year-old Russell Whipple suffering from gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported by Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department (JFRD) to a nearby hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries.

The JSO Homicide Unit, along with the Crime Scene Unit and the State Attorney’s Office, launched an investigation. Through evidence review, detectives identified 45-year-old Timothy Cherry as the suspect in the fatal shooting.

Timothy Cherry was arrested and booked into the John E. Goode Pretrial Detention Facility. He faces charges of Murder and Attempted Murder.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office expressed their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Whipple and reiterated their commitment to cooperating with prosecutors to bring justice and closure to the case.
