Three young adults have been arrested in western Colorado after police determined a homicide had occurred in the city of Fruita, authorities said.
Fruita police officers and Mesa County Sheriff’s deputies responded Saturday to a reported “suspicious incident” near the 21 Road desert area. During their investigation, officers learned that a homicide had taken place within the city limits and began interviewing individuals they believed were connected.
Police did not disclose what led them to the suspects, but later arrested Weston Owen, 18, Sarah Bess, 18, and Kellar Weisgerber, 21. All three were booked into the Mesa County Detention Center in Grand Junction.
Each suspect faces multiple felony charges, including:
First-degree murder
Felony evidence tampering
Felony abuse of a corpse
Felony conspiracy
Police said they believe all suspects involved in the case are in custody and that there is no ongoing threat to the community. As of Sunday afternoon, all three remained held without court cases yet entered.
The deceased will be identified by the Mesa County Coroner’s Office, which will also determine the cause and manner of death.
Fruita is located about 12 miles northwest of Grand Junction and roughly 250 miles west of Denver.
