Delhi police have arrested three men for stealing a mobile phone from a passenger on a bus and fraudulently withdrawing over Rs 7 lakh from the victim’s bank accounts by creating a fake UPI ID. The accused reportedly spent the money on trips to Dehradun, Haridwar, and Kedarnath in Uttarakhand.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Aman (25) and Karthikay (25) from Mohan Garden, and Prince Yadav (20) from Nangloi. On May 29, the complainant filed a case at the Najafgarh police station, reporting that his phone had been stolen on May 24. He discovered Rs 7.2 lakh missing from three of his bank accounts on May 28.
DCP (Dwarka) Ankit Singh stated that investigations revealed most transactions were conducted in Uttarakhand. A mobile number used during the fraudulent UPI transactions was registered under Shyam Kumar, who claimed he acted at the direction of Shashank, allegedly in Uttarakhand.
Following the leads, police apprehended Karthikay, who disclosed that his friend Aman had requested his help to facilitate the transactions. Subsequent arrests of Aman and Prince Yadav followed. Three other accused—Danny, Ritik, and Sumit—remain at large as the investigation continues.
During interrogations, Aman and Prince revealed that on May 24, they, along with Danny, Ritik, and Sumit, stole the victim’s mobile phone near Delhi Gate. The phone contained a copy of the complainant’s Aadhaar card, which was used to create a fake UPI ID. This ID was then linked to the victim’s three bank accounts, enabling the massive fraud.
Police are continuing their investigation to apprehend the remaining suspects and recover the stolen funds.
