BIRMINGHAM, UK — A group of international pickpockets has been sentenced for a series of thefts in Birmingham city centre, targeting unsuspecting shoppers at the Bullring mall and other nearby locations.
The offenders — Florin Adir, 21, Esmeralda Negut, 20, and Vasile Curti, 18 — were arrested after being caught red-handed by West Midlands Police, who were monitoring CCTV footage on Friday, February 21.
The trio, seen working together, followed victims around the city, with two acting as lookouts while the third stole cash and mobile phones. Police were reviewing footage from previous offences when they spotted the same group on live CCTV, attempting to steal from at least four people before fleeing at the sight of officers.
All three were caught shortly after, and charged with six theft offences dating back to November of the previous year. Though they admitted to the crimes in court, they claimed it was not part of a professional operation but an act of desperation. However, authorities revealed that the trio had prior international convictions for similar crimes across Europe.
📌 Sentencing Details:
Florin Adir (Wembley, North London): 6 months in prison
Esmeralda Negut (Burton-on-Trent): 12 months in prison
Vasile Curti (also from Wembley, 17 at the time): 6-month youth referral order
The gang was also ordered to pay over £3,000 in compensation and victim surcharges.
🗣️ Police Statement:
Pc Mat Evans commented after sentencing:
“I hope this serves as a message to any pickpockets thinking of coming to Birmingham – don’t. We have one of the best teams in the country, and we know your tactics.”
He also encouraged the public to remain vigilant and safeguard personal belongings in crowded areas.
