A city court in Gurgaon on Thursday sentenced three drug peddlers, including an Afghan national, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment each and imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh on each accused.

The accused, Asikul Sheikh from Murshidabad (West Bengal), Abdul Majid from Afghanistan, and Savinder Singh from Lajpat Nagar (Delhi), were apprehended in September 2022. Authorities recovered 1.308 kg of heroin, 993 grams of illegal narcotic chemicals, and 1.390 kg of caffeine from their possession.

They were living together in a rented accommodation in Gurgaon when police registered a case against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Foreigners Act at Sector-5 police station.

Additional Sessions Judge Sunil Kumar Diwan found all three guilty based on the evidence. Majid and Sheikh were sentenced under the NDPS Act, while Singh was convicted under sections 27A and 29 of the same act.

This judgment is part of Haryana’s ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking and abuse. In the past year, the Haryana State Narcotics Control Bureau filed 4,505 FIRs against drug offenders and identified over 7,500 individuals involved in drug addiction. The conviction rate under the NDPS Act rose from 48% in 2023 to 54% in 2024.

Authorities have declared 3,445 villages and 774 wards drug-free in recent years, and about 26,000 drug peddlers have been arrested and imprisoned over the last five years. In 2024 alone, nearly 5,000 drug-related arrests were made, including 1,000 major traffickers, with significant drug seizures reported.
